Can Activations be used for something else than the computer?

We want to tie the license to a specific hardware connected to the computer. Not to the computer itself. Can we use Activations for that? How in that case? Probably, we want to use something else than the Computer Key, a serial number of the hardware, and send that to the QLM server. Is that possible?
